Reel Engine Oil

Fishing reel oil….?
How and where do i apply fishing reel oil. I have a jerk in the reel (not caused by line) but i believe is caused by dirt in the gear box. I also do not know how to take this apart. Also, what kind of oil should i use or can i use something around the house?

If something is causing a jerk or jam as you wind the reel, it’s probably something inside the reel which has to be taken out, so you’ll have to open the reel.

Schematic diagrams for most reels are available online. Go to the manufacturer’s website and look under specifications or something like that. Print it out, get the necessary tools (usually a screwdriver and a wrench), and open it up. Keep the parts in order — especially drag washers — so the reel will work right when you reassemble it. There may also be information on how to open or where to lubricate the reel; if so, follow those instructions.

You can clean the old grimy grease out with an old toothbrush and a solvent like lacquer thinner.
